![]() In reality the cycle is a biological process that starts when ammonia is introduced into the water (and since fish produce a constant stream of ammonia the cycle starts when you add fish). Many people get the false impression that cycling a tank means to fill it with water and just let it run for a while with no fish. Thanks!Īre you sure you have a firm understanding of the nitrogen cycle (words will be link to article explaining it). Here's our basic setup and would appreciate any advice. ![]() ![]() Are they just hungry? Feeling lonely as it's just the two of them? We thought getting everything right first before adding some more fish mates. They've survived the night and seemed ok today, but still doing that with their mouths. We've been trying to lower the ph by adding API Ph down slowly. So we checked the air filter and found it was a bit dislodged and it was like that for the whole day! We've tested the water again and got the ff results - ammonia between. We've read this could be caused by lack of oxygen in the water. Last night, the two cardinals were just opening and closing their mouths quite a lot. We tested the new water to match the ph level in the tank and temperature. Yesterday we changed 25% of water and cleaned the gravel. We've bought an API master kit and been testing the water and monitoring temp since last week. The cardinals seemed hardy after what they've gone through. So by the end of the third/fourth day, the rummy noses were gone and were left with 2 cardinals. We've read about acclimatising newly bought fish and followed that but as novice tank owners, made the mistake of not researching about the fish before buying nor getting a proper master test kit. The LFS didn't say anything about our choices. We were drawn to cardinal tetras and rummy-noses and got 3 and 4 respectively. ![]() After doing a test, we were told we can put fish in. We've done a fishless cycle over Christmas in our 20gl tank and brought water sample to our LFS two weeks ago. ![]()
